The ban was criticized by those who believed it furthered an agenda and censorship of conservative ideologies. On December 18, Reddit took a criticized action of banning a subreddit, "SonyGOP", that was currently being utilized to distribute hacked Sony files. Reddit general manager Martin afterwards issued an apology for this actions, criticizing the "online witch hunts and harmful speculation" that took spot on the web site.
