In July 1977, the Ogaden War broke out after Barre's government employed a plea for countrywide unity to justify an aggressive incorporation of the predominantly Somali-inhabited Ogaden area of Ethiopia into a Pan-Somali Greater Somalia, together with the loaded agricultural lands of south-jap Ethiopia, infrastructure, and strategically significant areas as far north as Djibouti.
