The 1992 election of Bill Clinton marked the initial time the state was received by a Democrat because Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. Al Gore narrowly carried the condition in 2000 by 366 votes, and George W. Bush received in 2004 by significantly less than 6,000 votes. The CPA was originally headed by Jay Garner, a former US navy officer, but his appointment lasted only till eleven May 2003, when President Bush appointed L. Paul Bremer.
