His essay initiated what Dan Wakefield, in his memoir of New York in the fifties, called "the Great Orgasm Debate", which raged "not only in the pages of Dissent but in beds all in excess of New York". In a subsequent situation of Dissent the writer Ned Polsky argued that hipsters have been "so narcissistic that inevitably their orgasms are premature and puny".
