Dean Street was designed in the 1680s and was originally settled by French immigrants. Joseph Conrad employed Soho as the house for The Secret Agent, a French immigrant who ran a pornography store. Thomas De Quincey lived in the avenue soon after working away from Manchester Grammar School in 1802. Josiah Wedgwood ran his principal pottery warehouse and showrooms at Nos. Their major purpose is to deliver milk to a producing infant.
