In 1988, for the duration of the First Intifada, Ali participated in a Chicago rally in guidance of Palestine. Indirect Soviet guidance to the Palestinian side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict provided aid for Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
