Confusion above the time period led ecclesiastical commentators on the legislation to differentiate it into raptus seductionis (elopement with out parental consent) and raptus violentiae (ravishment). Both of these varieties of raptus experienced a civil penalty and possible excommunication for the loved ones and village receiving the kidnapped woman, though raptus violentiae also incurred punishments of mutilation or loss of life.
