In January 1964, though touring New Zealand with mates in a rented Morris Minor soon after sailing across the Tasman, Murdoch read through of a takeover bid for the Wellington paper by the British-dependent Canadian newspaper magnate, Lord Thomson of Fleet. Later in 1964, Murdoch launched The Australian, Australia's to start with national every day newspaper, which was based mostly 1st in Canberra and afterwards in Sydney.
