Although nineteenth-century laws ultimately outlawed the publication, retail, and trafficking of particular writings and photographs regarded as pornographic and would purchase the destruction of shop and warehouse stock meant for sale, the non-public possession of and viewing of (some varieties of) pornography was not created an offence till the twentieth century. Ostracism of porn performers intended they almost invariably used pseudonyms.
