It is the second most populous city in the Central-West Region, only surpassed by the country's capital Brasília, situated about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Goiânia. At the centre of the metropolis is the Marienplatz - a huge open up square named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column in its centre - with the Old and the New Town Hall.
