Religious progressives sought frequent floor involving the Christian faith and the new science and higher criticism. Many blended their faith with the Social Gospel-a postmillennialism drained of the miraculous, with social reform taking the position of the Second Coming. This standard pessimism about the route of culture was mirrored in a change absent from postmillennialism and toward premillennialism.
