A new federal town was then manufactured on the north lender of the Potomac, to the east of Georgetown. The City of Washington was launched in 1791 to provide as the nationwide capital, and Congress held its first session there in 1800. In 1801, the territory, previously portion of Maryland and Virginia (which include the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), formally grew to become identified as the federal district.
