Hunter launched the idea at a time when Americans have been already afraid: It was the Cold War, and America panicked at the thought of mass communist indoctrination by means of "brainwashing" - they might be converted and never even know it! The modern idea and the term "brainwashing" was first utilized by journalist Edward Hunter in 1951 to describe what had happened to American POWs in the course of the Korean War.
