In 1960, Mailer wrote "Superman Comes to the Supermarket" for Esquire magazine, an account of the emergence of John F. Kennedy through the Democratic Party convention. The essay was an important breakthrough for the New Journalism of the nineteen sixties, but when the magazine's editors altered the title to "Superman Comes to the Supermart", Mailer was enraged, and would not produce for Esquire for years.
