Though it reads like that ("she retains the hand that holds her down"), "Daughter" is in fact about a youngster with dyslexia ("mother reads aloud-little one tries to realize it"), whose mom and dad really don't understand her incapacity and use harsh actual physical punishment to offer with it ("the shades go down").
