The internal combustion motor was a technological marvel in its day, but worthless as a purchaser superior right up until a clutch, transmission, steering wheel and throttle ended up connected to it. So the GUI has long gone past getting an interface to individual desktops, and come to be a type of meta-interface that is pressed into service for each new piece of consumer engineering.
