California State University, Northridge was founded first as the Valley satellite campus of California State University, Los Angeles. The formal groundbreaking of the college happened on January 4, 1956, and was executed by, among other folks, the Governor of California Goodwin Knight and Los Angeles State College President Howard S. McDonald.
