Haley's father in The Order of the Stick taught her how to be paranoid all around many others and did not approve of Elan considering that his father is an evil warlord and his twin brother is just evil. Tarquin refuses to permit anyone of lowly stock to marry Elan, and frames Haley's father for the murder of the ambassador of Reptilia partly to see how she handles the scenario as a examination of her worthiness.
