African American academics Henry Louis Gates and Lani Guinier, whilst favoring affirmative action, have argued that in practice, it has led to the latest black immigrants and their small children staying considerably overrepresented at elite institutions, at the cost of the historic African American neighborhood produced up of descendants of slaves.
