Ivan III ("the Great") ultimately threw off the management of the Golden Horde and consolidated the whole of northern Rus' underneath Moscow's dominion, and was the initial Russian ruler to acquire the title "Grand Duke of all Rus'". In advancement of the Third Rome suggestions, the grand duke Ivan IV ("the Terrible") was officially crowned the 1st tsar of Russia in 1547.
