While quite a few doubted Whittaker Chambers's allegations that Hiss, a previous State Department official, had been a Soviet spy, Nixon thought them to be accurate and pressed for the committee to go on its investigation. He preserved helpful relations with his fellow anti-communist, controversial Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy, but was cautious to hold some distance amongst himself and McCarthy's allegations.
