Carlos Fuentes's 1985 novel The Old Gringo is a fictionalized account of Bierce's disappearance it was later tailored into the film Old Gringo (1989), starring Gregory Peck in the title purpose. Definitive affirmation of the job of Y. pestis arrived in 2010 with a publication in PLOS Pathogens by Haensch et al.
