The demise penalty has not been used in the District of Columbia given that 1957 and has now been abolished. On March 22, 1962, Kennedy signed into law HR5143 (PL87-423), which abolished the mandatory loss of life penalty for first diploma murder suspects in the District of Columbia, the only remaining jurisdiction in the United States with these types of a penalty.
