The basal placement of the coyote compared to the wolf is proposed to be owing to the coyote retaining much more of the mitochondrial genome of this unidentified canid. Compared with people observed in the fashionable spotted hyena, the frequency and spot of tooth fractures in these wolves suggests they were being recurring bone crackers.
