On 16 July 390 BC, a Gallic army below the leadership of tribal chieftain Brennus, met the Romans on the banking institutions of the Allia River ten miles north of Rome. The city of Rome grew from settlements close to a ford on the river Tiber, a crossroads of visitors and trade. This prompted a difficulty, in that Rome arrived to have a massive male population but was bereft of females.
