The First Punic War began in 264 BC, when the town of Messana questioned for Carthage's help in their conflicts with Hiero II of Syracuse. Rome entered this war mainly because Syracuse and Messana had been way too shut to the freshly conquered Greek metropolitan areas of Southern Italy and Carthage was now in a position to make an offensive by Roman territory together with this, Rome could lengthen its domain around Sicily.
