As described by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the substantial degree of manatee deaths have "met the criteria to be declared an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) by the Working Group on Marine Mammal Unusual Mortality Events." There were 841 manatee fatalities recorded involving Jan. 1 and July 2, 2021, the maximum range of manatee fatalities of any 12 months in recorded record.
