As described by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the superior amount of manatee fatalities have "fulfilled the conditions to be declared an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) by the Working Group on Marine Mammal Unusual Mortality Events." There were being 841 manatee deaths recorded concerning Jan. one and July 2, 2021, the highest amount of manatee fatalities of any calendar year in recorded history.
