His small panel portrait of Henry VIII shows an interpenetration between his panel and miniature painting. In portray Henry as an iconic hero, even so, he also subtly conveyed the tyranny of his character. Nobody has ever surpassed the revealing profile and stance in his portraits: through their telling use, Holbein even now conveys across the centuries the character and likeness of his sitters with an unrivalled mastery.
