Kubrick known as Chapter 21 "an further chapter" and claimed that he had not read through the initial variation until finally he had just about finished the screenplay and that he experienced under no circumstances offered really serious consideration to employing it. In Kubrick's view - as in the feeling of other readers, together with the authentic American editor - the ultimate chapter was unconvincing and inconsistent with the reserve.
