As claimed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the high degree of manatee deaths have "met the criteria to be declared an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) by the Working Group on Marine Mammal Unusual Mortality Events." There had been 841 manatee fatalities recorded among Jan. 1 and July 2, 2021, the best amount of manatee deaths of any year in recorded heritage.
