Though the Tories initially supported Catholic king James II, some of them, along with the Whigs, all through the Revolution of 1688 invited Dutch prince William of Orange to defeat James and finally to come to be William III of England. With the East India Company, England also competed with the Dutch and French in the East. Combined, these prompted the reform of local governing administration in England in the mid-twentieth century.
