Born in Charlottesville, Fountain was a descendant of Wormley Hughes and Ursula Granger his grandparents were between the residence slaves owned by Jefferson at Monticello. Jefferson authorized two of Sally's children to go away Monticello without having official manumission when they came of age 5 other slaves, like the two remaining sons of Sally, were freed by his will on his dying. The latter two were 50 percent-sisters to Jefferson's spouse.
