Throughout the state, Jewish peddlers introduced items to much less-populated towns and villages that experienced no retail suppliers. These Central European Jews typically became peddlers or opened retail outlets. Eastern European Jews referred to the United States as the "goldineh medinah," Yiddish for golden land.
