His essay initiated what Dan Wakefield, in his memoir of New York in the 1950s, termed "the Great Orgasm Debate", which raged "not only in the webpages of Dissent but in beds all around New York". In a subsequent concern of Dissent the author Ned Polsky argued that hipsters were being "so narcissistic that inevitably their orgasms are untimely and puny".
