During that period of time, the garrison based at the Residency in Lucknow was besieged by rebel forces throughout the Siege of Lucknow. Following the rebellion's defeat, Begum Hazrat Mahal and other rebel leaders sought asylum in Nepal. In the subsequent Indian Rebellion of 1857, his 14-12 months-aged son Birjis Qadra, whose mom was Begum Hazrat Mahal, was topped ruler.
