Following a period of time of civil strife, Iceland acceded to Norwegian rule in the thirteenth century. The Icelandic Commonwealth lasted right up until the thirteenth century when the political system devised by the original settlers proved not able to cope with the rising energy of Icelandic chieftains. As of 2020, statewide elections in Massachusetts utilized a plurality voting process.
