Ōyama also promoted the concept of philanthropy (not a typical section of aristocratic Japanese life) to high-ranking Japanese females. She was Director of the Ladies Relief Association and the Ladies Volunteer Nursing Association, President of the Ladies Patriotic Association, and Chairman of the Japanese Red Cross Society. She also advocated for women's education and inspired upper-class Japanese ladies to volunteer as nurses.
