There are some things that neither MIT nor New Jersey could be pleased with, and they could even have won in the market. What they've in widespread is that they're for a niche market, however one which they utterly own even thirty years later with legacy code. TeX appears to solve one of those and succeeds regardless of having an unpleasant macro language.
