Haley's father in The Order of the Stick taught her how to be paranoid all around other folks and did not approve of Elan considering that his father is an evil warlord and his twin brother is just evil. Tarquin refuses to make it possible for anybody of lowly inventory to marry Elan, and frames Haley's father for the murder of the ambassador of Reptilia partly to see how she handles the scenario as a test of her worthiness.
