In July 1977, the Ogaden War broke out immediately after Barre's federal government utilized a plea for nationwide unity to justify an intense incorporation of the predominantly Somali-inhabited Ogaden region of Ethiopia into a Pan-Somali Greater Somalia, together with the rich agricultural lands of south-jap Ethiopia, infrastructure, and strategically significant regions as much north as Djibouti.
