During World War II she set up a laboratory in her bed room in Turin and researched the expansion of nerve fibers in rooster embryos, finding that nerve cells die when they lack targets, and laying the groundwork for substantially of her later on study. She was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve expansion element (NGF).
