In Jacobellis v. Ohio and other situations, the United States Supreme Court ruled that only "hardcore" pornography could be prohibited by obscenity legislation, with the relaxation shielded by the First Amendment. A distinction amongst "hardcore pornography" and "borderline pornography" (or "borderline obscenity") was made in the nineteen fifties and sixties by American jurists talking about obscenity rules.
