California State University, Northridge was started first as the Valley satellite campus of California State University, Los Angeles. The official groundbreaking of the university happened on January 4, 1956, and was performed by, amid some others, the Governor of California Goodwin Knight and Los Angeles State College President Howard S. McDonald.
