His Code is intensely motivated by Christianity (his account of Hell and of the apocalypse intently follow the New Testament and are not located in before Iroquois beliefs) but features some distinctively Iroquois features. The Code of Handsome Lake is an intriguing example of a moral and spiritual code penned by a man from a hoe society. Handsome Lake was a religious reformer among the the Iroquois in the 18th century.
