Ivan was ok right up until his spouse died, at which position he became paranoid and started off executing the nobility for unclear causes, wrecked the financial system, and burnt and pillaged the previously wonderful city of Novgorod (element of his possess kingdom!) with thousands of deaths. He died, there was a big succession squabble, and consequently began the Time of Troubles, whose title is pretty self-explanatory.
