In January 1964, although touring New Zealand with mates in a rented Morris Minor just after sailing across the Tasman, Murdoch read through of a takeover bid for the Wellington paper by the British-primarily based Canadian newspaper magnate, Lord Thomson of Fleet. Later in 1964, Murdoch released The Australian, Australia's first countrywide each day newspaper, which was based to start with in Canberra and later on in Sydney.
