Though it reads like that ("she retains the hand that holds her down"), "Daughter" is in fact about a youngster with dyslexia ("mother reads aloud-little one attempts to fully grasp it"), whose parents do not realize her incapacity and use severe actual physical punishment to offer with it ("the shades go down").
