First to identify the phenomenon, Stanley Cohen investigated a collection of "moral panics" in his 1972 e book Folk Devils and Moral Panics. It’s a little bit haunting that almost all of the subjects covered listed here (identity politics, Supreme Court appointments, campaign finance reform, racism in America) are just as appropriate right now as they had been in 2006.
