Many of the principles from Phase II (along with some scripts) created their way into Star Trek: The Next Generation and the sequence itself is thought of deuterocanon - not "real" canon, because it hardly ever created it to the display screen, but allowed in Broad Strokes to fill a gap in Trek chronology (see the fictional duration of time between The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan).
